Let the Clothes Do the Talking!

Your clothes can say a lot about you, revealing more of yourself than maybe you'd like to share. This is not always a bad thing. Sometimes using your clothes to make a bold statement gives you the encouragement you need to reach certain goals. Clothes are more than a necessity; fashion can be used as a tool to fuel self-esteem and self-exploration.

Accessories
Accessorizing is a great way to accentuate an outfit, but it is also an expression of creativity. Accessories can include anything from hats, jewelry, purses and hair-related items. Certain pieces, particularly ones relevant to your personal interests, can be a great way to showcase your personality. A friend of mine is a big fan of Alice in Wonderland and literature in general. She manages to incorporate a long necklace with a golden teacup into most of her outfits. It's simple, looks great and represents her personality to a "tea."

Colors
It's so easy to get comfortable wearing black and white. At one point in my life, I don't think I owned one colorful piece of clothing. Once I began to expand my wardrobe with different hues, I had an entirely different outlook on life. As funny as it sounds, a splash of color had revitalized me to a point where I felt more confident, more approachable and certainly more fashionable. Colors also serve as subtle indicators, suggesting friendliness, professionalism, humility and even sexuality.

Patterns
Patterns, as we all very well know, need to be worn sparingly, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't stand out. With patterns, a little can go a very long way. A hint of polka dots can make an average outfit look young and playful. Paisley prints can be more feminine and inviting. If a certain pattern appeals to you, then consider that print a reflection of your personality and taste and wear it with pride.

Brands
Wearing certain brands can also be a fun way to represent yourself through clothing. Take my mother for instance; she has a small collection of Salvatore Ferragamo shoes that she's been hoarding for probably thirty years. Every year for Christmas she picks a pair to wear out to brunch. Now, if I see a Ferragamo advertisement or pass by the store at the mall, all I can think of is, MOM! I also have a friend who is more in favor of wearing non-brand name clothing. She prefers a vintage look, wearing items predominantly found in thrift stores. Whereas my mother might put forth a message of refinement and luxury with her designer shoes, my friend's style gives the impression of individuality and distinction.

The great thing about clothes is that you can pick and match everything yourself, making them completely customizable. Your style is based off of what you like, so don't feel inclined to wear something just because it's trendy. Who you are and what you stand for can manifest in an incredible outfit. You just can't shy away from exploring the possibilities.
